In the couple of weeks (or more) since I posted, a lot has happened. I have a job!!! Unfortunately, it is in a town 2 hours from home. Once I am trained, I will be telecommuting most of the time. However, right now, I spend 4 days a week driving up and back.

We bought a motorhome. It is a Safari Serengeti. We love it. We got it for the price we wanted. It needed some TLC and that was the main reason for our price. We’ve replaced a roof vent, cabinet latches, repaired a couple of plumbing leaks and are in the process of replacing the AC covers to prevent a couple of roof leaks. Idealy, it needs to sleep a couple of more but with air mattresses and/or a tent, it works.

We have chicks, as I think I mentioned. They are growing fast and absolutely adorable. Unfortunately, two issues are problematic with the rest of the hens. First, two more have gone broody, one a Rhode Island Red which aren’t supposed to be broody at all. Second, some of our eggs are tasking less than satisfactory. We can’t figure out what they are eating. I have heard it could be a hen is “bad” but since it happens in different egg colors, at different proportions of eggs laid each week, it has to be something they are eating. WHAT?!?

DD#1 didn’t make the high school dance team and DD#2 read more than anyone is the school this year — over 8 million words.

I take my Extra test tomorrow. Wish me luck, the practice tests are kicking my ass half the time. It’s been many, many years since I’ve needed to memorize algorithms.

This was the first one to hatch. We have eight total. Two have not hatched yet and after candling them, one looks unlikely to hatch and the other may. We are not that experienced candling, especially dark brown eggs. This girls want to make pets of all of them. Ugh!

We are going to look at a motorhome later today. We sold our camper last fall and have been searching for a motorhome as we need something bigger. We may have found the one. We’ll have to see. We borrowed my sister’s pop-up recently and I just can’t deal with so little space. In theory, the thing sleeps 8. It sleeps 8 well but it doesn’t house their belongings well. I’ll try to post some pics if we get it.

But, I also started a new job that has me hopping!!

I spent more time today working on making a corner of the guest room my office. So far I’m pleased with the results. I need internet access. This requires running more wire and isn’t a job to do by myself. I’ll have to wait until I can bribe someone into crawling under the house.

I’ve watched home improvement shows where they paint the inside (and sometimes outside) of cabinets like I have for the computer. I am contemplating such. A fresh coat of paint might make for a fresher start at my new job. Plus, it’s sure to be more pleasing than the fake semi-dark oak of the cabinet. I’m going to check and see what paint we have on hand before I make a decision. I already got cork tiles to put on the insides of the doors. I’m fairly certain we have some sunshine yellow and some dark blue but I was wondering about a light leaf green. I think we have some white I could lighten the yellow with. Chalkboard paint might work well on the doors where the cork won’t be. Hmmm.

I might need to slow down before I get too busy painting and organizing and not enough time working.

I love our little flock of hens. My only complaint so far is our flea population this year is unusually high. It’s not because we have chickens but I thought they’d do a better job eating them. We’ve banned all animals from the house as a result of the flea population this spring.

I am preparing to work from home. For the last 10 months, that’s basically what I’ve been doing. However, working to find a job was temporary and thus, my digs were temporary. Now, it appears I’ve found something permanent and seeing how it will have me working from home most of the time, I need to move into more permanent digs. Occupying a corner of our workout room has turned working out into a cramped chore and thus, we are not working out.

So, I am moving into the guest room. Years ago when the girls were little and I needed to be around them and not stuck in an office at the far end of the house, I purchased a cabinet meant to house computer, printer, peripherals, etc. It’s a huge, somewhat ugly but functional monstrosity. Because of its size, I never got rid of it. I slid it into the guest room and filled it with yarn. I have decided to repurpose it back to its original intent — a computer desk.

This means I have to actually go through the yarn I have accumulated over the last ten years. I started yesterday on this task. I did not realize what a task I was taking on. When last I had really delved into it, each skein was nice and neat and tucked in by itself. Well, over the last bit of time, those skeins have been conspiring against me. They’ve been dancing themselves into knots. I spent quite a while sorting through it all. However, I am very close to having the entire cabinet free of anything but computer components. I am left contemplating the best way to store the many zipper baggies I have full of yarn. I have been very lucky no little critters invaded my stash. I had forgotten how much beautiful hand-dyed alpaca wool yarn I have.

This move requires a bit of rearranging of furniture as well. I think in the end, I will be happier with something a bit more permanent. I am not a neat person and having this space will allow me to be free-er with my piles. If the piles are neat, I can usually tell you what’s in each one. Right now, I’m lost.

In the process of preparing furniture for the move, I’ve found baby clothes and forgotten pictures, handprints in paint, and stacks and stacks of books. Only our youngest daughter has gone to digital media for reading. The other of us will read a pdf here and there on the computer but she has a Nook and reads it constantly. After sorting through stacks of books I didn’t really want to part with, I am wondering if something digital might not be nice, if for no other reason than storage. But there’s just something about turning a page, smelling the paper.

Anyway, changes are a comin’. Maybe I’ll remember to post some pictures.

Last night, DH and I sat in the door of the shop overlooking our multitude of vehicles, only a couple of which are anywhere close to fuel efficient. We pondered whether there was any advantage financially to buying something more fuel efficient. If I had a job, I’d be putting spending on average $425 a month on fuel. I have no truck payment and my insurance is dirt cheap. To purchase something more fuel efficient, I’d have to finance it. So, in the short-term, I’d use up any cost savings on fuel by paying for the vehicle and insurance. In the long run, there might be some advantage to it. But, would there? I’m not sure these little fuel efficient cars (which the size of scares me to death) are designed for longevity. I can reasonably expect to get another 250,000 to 300,000 miles from my Dodge motor. I do need to put a little money into a paint job. But, there are few “gadgets” to fail. I have electric windows and door locks. Both are cheap to repair if need be and aren’t going to prevent me from getting from point A to point B if I don’t repair them.

We decided that at best, I’d save $200 a month on fuel. For the cost of a more fuel efficient vehicle, it’s up-keep, & insurance, it’s not worth it to us right now.
